When I was providing support in a helicopter with a machine gun, mowing down enemies from afar, it gave me a sort of devilish pleasure like I was really fighting a war. You would never feel like playing in the same places or feeling bored because the gameplay is so dynamic with such maps.

There are nine cards in the deck all gigantic and with their own identity. The beta was clearly an older version as the retail game is much more polished and has fewer bugs. Team-based tactical gameplay that rewards you for achieving goals? Oh how I missed you, Battlefield. It’s what defines Battlefield, and I’m happy to say that DICE delivered a lot here. The multiplayer component is the meat of the game.

Overall, the campaign is good as long as you don’t expect an Oscar-worthy story or tactical gameplay. But a less linear campaign would have been nice. I know this is intentional, as the engine is capable of so much more as the multiplayer maps are quite gigantic and packed with detail. Why am I put on a 5 second timer if I get slightly out of the way? It’s fucking Battlefield. I had a problem with the campaign, namely linearity. The weapons are well detailed and stay true to their real life counterparts.

The lighting and crisp textures on the PC make this a sight to behold. Kind of like a first-party studio with unlimited funding, almost. I mentioned earlier how good the visuals are, but the game shows that DICE is clearly in a different league right now. The campaign took me almost 7 hours on normal difficulty to complete, which you would normally expect. There are some nice touches here with flashbacks and third person narration. I’ve never liked previous Battlefield campaigns, and this one managed to keep my interest despite being a little underwhelming at first. I’m not blaming DICE because they’ve done a good job here. High on set pieces, decent history, and extremely fast paced. It’s not like you’re driving a vehicle aimlessly with your team inside and crashing into buildings and trees and accomplishing unnecessary goals. It’s not a typical Battlefield campaign, mind you. There are twists and turns as you would expect, and you play as Russians as well.

The basic principle is to prevent a nuclear bomb from exploding in the heart of New York City, that is, in Times Square.

While it’s cliché in the extreme as you would expect, it also tells the story of a soldier who does what he thinks is best to protect his country. In other words, your eyes will melt looking at the exhilarating graphics on offer. Coming to Battlefield 3 campaign mode… hey stop it guys! I know multiplayer is the only thing that matters in such games, but the campaign here is a good showcase for the new engine, as it shows a lot of varied environments that are beautifully rendered and presented. The new engine was EA’s masterpiece, as Frostbite 2 demonstrates its superiority over PC. So given that I loved Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and it’s generally considered a spinoff game, what improvement do we have here in Battlefied 3? A lot, apparently. In fact, I’d say Battlefield 3 on PC is the closest to getting a taste of what next-gen games would be like. PC gaming, however, is a completely different offering.

I played the Battlefield 3 beta on PS3 a lot and felt like it was a mixed bag you could say that i was not so impressed, in fact, as evidenced by my impressions, which you can read here.
